Preparation Guide

For your Portrait Sessions

We’re so excited to photograph you!

Whether this is a senior portrait, professional headshot, or personal portrait session, this guide will help you get ready so your images turn out amazing and your session feels relaxed and fun.

1. Plan Your Outfits

Your choice of clothing has a big impact on how your portraits look.

Tips for Choosing Outfits

  • Pick outfits that fit your personal style and make you feel confident.

  • Choose solid colors or subtle patterns — avoid loud logos or distracting prints.

  • Bring at least 1–2 options so we can change looks during the session.

  • Consider complementary colors if you want multiple outfit looks.

  • Think about layering (jackets, scarves, accessories) for visual interest.

Fit + Comfort

  • Wear clothing that fits well and feels comfortable — you’ll look more at ease in the photos.

  • Avoid outfits that are too tight, too loose, or need frequent adjusting.

4. What to Bring

Here’s a checklist for your session day:

  • Full outfit changes (if applicable)

  • Accessories (hats, jewelry, scarves, glasses)

  • Makeup/touch-up kit

  • Water and snacks (especially helpful for longer sessions)

  • Props that reflect your personality (instrument, sports gear, book, etc.)

5. On the Day of Your Session

Arrive on Time

  • Please arrive 10–15 minutes early to check in, pick your first outfit look, and get settled before shooting begins.

Relax and Be Yourself

  • Portraits look best when you’re relaxed and having fun. Don’t worry about posing — I’ll guide you through flattering positions and expressions!

Communication Is Key

  • If there’s a specific vibe or pose you want, tell me! I’m here to help create images you love.

6. Location Tips

If your session is outdoors:

  • Check the weather and dress accordingly.

  • Plan travel time — traffic or parking can add extra minutes.

  • Bring layers in case it gets chilly or warm.

If shooting in the studio:

  • Avoid heavy fragrances — they can interfere with the experience.

  • Studio sessions are climate-controlled for comfort, so dress for how you want to be seen in the images.

7. Final Tips for a Great Session

✨ Sleep well the night before — rested eyes look better in photos
✨ Drink water throughout the day to keep skin glowing
✨ Wear something you LOVE and feel confident in

I look forward to seeing you at your upcoming appointment!

2. Hair and Makeup

  • For both men and women: plan your haircut or trim a few days before your session, so it looks natural on game day.

  • Light makeup for headshots or portraits helps define your features under camera lighting.

  • If you use makeup daily, apply it as you normally would — just a bit more than usual helps photos pop.

  • Bring a small makeup kit or comb for quick touch-ups.

3. Grooming Details

  • Check for any stray hairs, clean fingernails, and tidy up facial hair.

  • Men: trim nose/ear hair and shave or groom beard before the session.

  • Women: consider subtle fake lash application if you like them — they show up well in portraits.
